Summer Skin: 5 Steps to a Warm-Weather Glow

Getting great summer skin doesn’t have to be difficult with these tips!

With the days growing longer, and temperatures rising, it’s time to start your regimen for healthy summer skin!  As we crawl out of hibernation, there are a few easy steps to take to ensure your skin will be summer ready. The dry, chapped skin of winter has got to go in order to get that sunkissed glow!

Licensed esthetician, Julie Proszynski has offered five essential tips to revive your glow for perfect summer skin.

“Everyone loves those warm summer days, but with the sunshine comes a host of skincare issues that you need to know how to handle,” said Proszynski.  “From UVA rays to improper hydration- it is vital that you protect your skin from the elements of summer. These tips will help keep your skin hydrated like the ocean and glowing like the sun. ”

Change your skincare with the seasons

In winter, we all require layer upon layer of rich moisturizers, whereas for summer skin, a lighter moisturizer is key for a dewy, fresh look.  Proszynski suggests searching for items containing Vitamin C.

There is no comparison to the effect of this wonder ingredient!” said Proszynski.  “Adding a vitamin C cleanser, toner, serum, or moisturizer will help brighten and clear your complexion, decrease the visibility of fine lines, and help achieve the glow.  The antioxidant properties of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and its role in collagen synthesis make vitamin C a vital molecule for skin health, both topically and internally.”

Exfoliation is everything

As we age, our skin cell turnover declines (just like our natural collagen production), thus creating the need for us to take matters into our own hands with exfoliation.

“There are two basic types of exfoliation: mechanical and chemical,” said Proszynski. “Mechanical, or physical exfoliation, uses a grainy scrub, rotating brush, or a textured cloth to loosen dead skin cells on the surface. This method tackles uneven texture and should ideally be used 1-2 times a week for normal skin types, or once every 2 weeks for more sensitive skin types. Chemical exfoliation differs in that it uses hydroxy acids, enzymes, and retinol to encourage the sloughing away of dead skin cells.  Typically in serum or facial wipe form, chemical exfoliants should be used after cleansing, but before moisturizing.”

Those with normal skin type will see optimal results by exfoliating every evening. However, more sensitive skin types should start off at two times a week and increase usage as your skin becomes more acclimated. Proszynski said that to achieve glowing, even summer skin, incorporate both mechanical and chemical methods into your skincare routine prior to the harsh summer rays. Preparing your skin properly creates an even, clear base for minimal makeup application as well; there nothing worse than a full coverage foundation on a humid summer day.  Try switching to a lighter tinted moisturizer, and let your natural skin and beauty shine through!

SPF is your friend

Regularly using SPF is imperative when seeking healthy summer skin.  Proszynski said, “Exfoliation, hydration, and any other positives can be disregarded without the addition of sun protection. To put things in perspective: only 10% of our aging process is intrinsic, or natural cellular process while an astonishing 90% is extrinsic, and largely caused by sun exposure.”  This includes fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, loss of elasticity – you name it.

No matter the season, Proszynski says, apply SPF after your moisturizer.  Applying in that order will ensure proper absorption, and also create a barrier of protection over your skin.  Lucky for us, as time goes on and new products are developed, applying SPF has become even more accessible.

“There are now hydrosol options combined with refreshing rosewater you apply as a lovely mist throughout the day,” said Proszynski.  “Our skin is our largest organ, and does an amazing job of protecting us daily! We owe it the same respect and care.”

Hydration is the spice of life

There is no doubt water is an essential part our everyday life. Approximately 60% of our bodies are made up of this invaluable resource.

Skin lacking a sufficient water supply can be dry, tight, itchy, and flaky and may also look and feel rough or wrinkled, and lack visible radiance,” Proszynski said.  When skin is well-hydrated, it is more plump and resilient. This is due, at least in part, to an ingredient in the skin called hyaluronic acid.”

To put it simply, the job of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to hold water: when there is adequate water internally, skin looks healthier and more vibrant. Water also works differently in various organs, acting as a carrier of nutrients, a medium for eliminating toxins, a structural support, as well as a temperature regulator which is extremely important in the summer heat. Obviously, drinking lots of fluids throughout the day creates optimal results. However, the types of fluids make all the difference. Coffee and sodas are not viable options as they contain caffeine, which is a diuretic that draws water out of your system and skin. Any one of the Vital Proteins products are optimal for proper hydration as many of them contain hyaluronic acid. Every product from the original Collagen Peptides, to the amazing Collagen Beauty Greens and Waters will help keep you and your skin hydrated.

Vital Proteins Collagen Beauty Waters

Proszynski suggests keeping a healthy supply of collagen supplements on hand.

“Collagen is a fibrous protein that’s a key structural component of your skin—it helps keep your skin youthful, lubricates joints, and aids in digestion,” said Proszynski.  “It’s also jam-packed with amino acids that are quite important in keeping bodily functions on par, like sleep-boosting glycine, as well as proline which aids in overall skin health.”

Vital Proteins recently began unveiling new products from the upcoming beauty centered line, including a trio of Collagen Beauty Waters. Available in Lavender Lemon, Melon Mint, and Cucumber Aloe, each work from the inside out to restore your natural beauty and promote wellness. All three flavors are made with the superior bioavailable Marine Collagen, natural Hyaluronic Acid, and probiotics. Improving your skin’s elasticity and gut health, while growing stronger hair and nails with each scoop or stick pack! In addition to the aforementioned benefits, each flavor has individual advantages too! Lavender is a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal, which provides an extra powerful kick towards proper digestion. Honeydew melon is very hydrating and chock full of vitamins A,B, and C. Last but not least, both cucumber and aloe and extremely soothing, cooling, hydrating ingredients, that are beyond refreshing in the summer heat. Our body’s natural collagen production decreases every year starting from twenty-five, and Vital Proteins is making it more accessible and enjoyable than ever to supplement self-care and rejuvenate the skin and body.
