Travel Prep: Eat Your Moisture
What you do for your skin during the days leading up to a trip has a big impact on how our it reacts to the stress of travel. Giving your skin a few days of prep will help it fight off stress, and lead to less recovery time later.
A couple of days prior to send off, increase your intake of omega-3s to protect skin cells from stress and dehydration. A few great options with over 2,000 mg per serving include:
- Chia Seeds
- Cod liver oil
Likewise, increasing water intake and consumption of hydrating foods like cantaloupe, melon, celery, and cucumber will help combat dry cabin air to keep you looking fresh.
That being said, it is also important to avoid harsh, and drying treatments the few days prior to travel. Our skin needs every last bit of moisture, so it’s best to bypass peels and most acids. Instead, look for a great moisturizer with hyaluronic acid – a hydration miracle ingredient.
While en Route: Bring the Right Products
Sheet masks are a convenient option when on the go. As they increase in popularity, there are now a lot of different treatment types available. Invest in a few masks with moisturizing properties and vitamin C for a brightening effect. For those who don’t want to devote themselves to a full sheet mask, under eye gels are a great option, too as they are a little more discreet. Under eye gels do a great job at plumping fine lines around the eyes and decreasing puffiness.
Make sure to bring that great hyaluronic acid moisturizer you used to prep your skin, and apply once your masks are removed. If you have dry skin, a hydration-binding serum — more hyaluronic acid — applied before your moisturizer will give you that extra layer of hydration and plump lines.
Post Travel: Application, Application, Application
Upon arrival, and after unpacking, partake in a post-travel skincare refresher. Applying a hydrating mask after cleansing will help your skin calm down from the day’s stress. Follow with these steps for best results:
- Remove the mask with a warm, damp towel.
- Warm a dime-sized amount of moisturizer on finger tips.
- Starting at the chin, massage the cream in upward, outward circular motions. Be mindful around your eyes, and follow the natural muscle direction.
- Starting at the inner corners of your eye (close to the bridge of your nose) travel up and over the brow bones to circle around the under eye area. Repeat three times.
These massaging techniques will boost circulation to help you wake up with a plump complexion, without any evidence of moisture loss.
