Chapped Lips No More! Try These 3 DIY Scrub Treatments for a Softer Pout

Your lips are extremely delicate and need constant nourishment to stay smooth and luscious. While guzzling down eight glasses of water each day is necessary for keeping the whole body hydrated, there’s more to healthy lips than simple hydration. A DIY lip scrub is great to incorporate into your routine to remove dry skin and reveal a smooth lip. As with all DIY beauty, a homemade recipe is not only simple and affordable, but ideal when it comes to our beauty products, giving us more control  over what we put on our skin.

A lip scrub recipe can be as simple as two ingredients: an exfoliator and a nourishing agent or emollient. An emollient, or moisturizer, is commonly used in beauty recipes to keep the skin supple and reduce moisture loss. I recommend emollients with fatty and linoleic acids, such as olive or coconut oil, which absorb very well. By combining the two, you are not only sloughing away dead skin, but also following up with a hydrator to smooth cracks and nourish. Say goodbye to chapped lips with one of the following DIY lip scrub recipes!

Homemade Cinnamon Lip Scrub

Cinnamon is an amazingly warm flavor and scent, and when added to lip scrubs it creates a warming sensation that ‘plumps’ the lips. The avocado oil and honey in this recipe will not only extend this scrub’s shelf life, but also increase hydration and repair.

  • 2 T brown sugar
  • ½ T avocado oil
  • ½ T raw honey
  • ½ t organic cinnamon powder

Homemade Peppermint Lip Scrub

Invigorating and refreshing peppermint essential oil will wake up your senses and provide a slight tingling effect. While hemp seed oil is not as common as other oils, it is rich in fatty acids and provides a great base for this recipe.

  • 2 T brown sugar
  • 1 T hemp seed oil
  • 2-3 drops organic peppermint essential oil

Homemade Honey Coconut Lip Scrub

This recipe is for the minimalists out there. Simple and effective, the entire ingredient list is likely already stocked in your pantry. Coconut oil and raw honey are a match made in heaven, and together provide numerous healing benefits.

  • 2 T brown sugar
  • 1 T coconut oil
  • ½ T raw honey

Directions for all recipes:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small mixing bowl
  2. Apply a dime-sized amount to lips with fingertips
  3. Gently slough away dead skin cells in a circular motion
  4. Remove remaining grit
  5. Follow with a small amount of the same oil used in chosen recipe
  6. Store excess scrub in an airtight container for a longer shelf life
