Your Frequently Asked Collagen Questions, Answered

Collagen has been all the buzz in the fitness and beauty world as of late, but it can be hard to find information that easily explains what it is. Don’t worry, though. We did the hard work for you. We have highlighted three of your most frequently asked questions about the super-nutrient to help improve your collagen IQ.

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. It functions as the central component of connective tissue, which includes your cartilage, bone, skin, hair and nails. It even forms your “inner skin,” which is the lining of your organs, like your gut lining. Collagen supports the moisture and strength in all of these body parts, making it especially important for beauty and fitness benefits.

Where Does Collagen Come From?

This answer can differ depending on the brand you’re buying from. Collagen is commonly sourced from the skin, bones and cartilage of animals. To date, a vegan or vegetarian source of collagen has not been found. Vital Proteins’ Collagen Peptides come from grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine hides and our Marine Collagen Peptides come from sustainably-caught red snapper scales.

Why Should I Take Collagen?

Ingestible collagen is an important supplement to consider taking. Why? Although our bodies naturally produce it, collagen production begins to wane after the age of 25. We begin to make less collagen, about 1% less each year. By including collagen in your diet, you can support healthy bones, joints, skin, nails and hair, while also getting a clean source of protein.
